Caged

I told you
I loved you
Every night
I’ve been by your side
Through every
Fight
As we struggled together
Hand clasped tightly in
Hand
In terrifying places
Absent of light
So
How can you say
You don’t matter to
Me?
How can that be
Something you
Truly believe?
Or is it merely a lie
Meant to
Protect
Yourself?
An ice cold curtain
Draped over your heart
Chains I thought
I had released you
From
A rusted cage
A clattering cacophony
Locked tight
Around your
Wild soul
Something I thought I’d
Banished
Long ago
I wholeheartedly believed
I’d set you free
That you truly knew
How much you meant to
Me
But how could I not
See
That you were
Broken
All along?
I sang a beautiful melody
Never noticing when
You did not sing along
I boarded a lovely boat
Of hope and dreams
That you did not move to
Step upon
So who have I been
Loving
All along
If I had been so so
Completely
Wrong? And
Why did you
Claim you loved me too
So cruelly
For this
Long
If
In the end
I was the very cage
You wanted to
Escape
From?
